History of the Hartley House:
Concerned citizens from Curry and Roosevelt counties joined together in 1978 to consider ways of dealing with the problem of domestic violence and spousal abuse. Through their efforts a program to help battered families was established, with the Shelter for Victims of Domestic Violence opening in Portales in December 1978 and Clovis in January 1979. The Clovis and Portales shelters were consolidated in January of 1983 in the interest of cost effectiveness.
January 2004 The Shelter for Victims of Domestic Violence changed its name to The Hartley House. The name change was made in honor of Mary Hartley, a tireless supporter of the shelter.
Outreach services are provided to outlying areas where offices do not exist. All shelter services are available to residents of these outlying areas.
